Limerick City and County Councillor, Councillor Kieran O’ Hanlon has been elected President of the Association of Irish Local Government.
The City North area member, who lives in Rhebogue, has been a councillor since 1991 and is the first elected member from Limerick to hold the position of AILG President. He follows in the footsteps of Cllr. Gail Dunne, who served as President of the AILG for the last twelve months. Joining Councillor O’ Hanlon at the helm is Councillor Jimmy McClearn from Galway County Council who was voted Vice President at yesterday’s Annual General Meeting in Mullingar.
Cllr. O’ Hanlon stated that it is a tremendous honour to accept the office of President of the AILG and vowed to bring his 33 years of experience to the position to continue to work on behalf of its members.
Speaking following his election, Cllr. O’ Hanlon said;
“As Councillors, we have a proud legacy and deep-rooted involvement in our communities. I believe there is now a great opportunity for this association over the coming 12 months to capitalise on the positive conversation happening around local government and to be an influential participant in local government policy formulation.
In partnership with the Vice President and Executive Committee, I am committed to ensuring that the voice of Councillors remains at the forefront of local government issues, and that AILG continues to improve and develop our training delivery and support to Councillors across the country.”
