Councillors from across the country gathered at the Mullingar Park Hotel and the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cork as AILG delivered its first in-person Induction training module to Elected Members.
Delivered by AILG staff, there was great attendance at the Induction which covered a number of important and practical areas including Post Local Elections Statutory Returns, Code of Conduct, Introduction to AILG and Elected Member Supports. All attendees also received an induction pack which included a copy of our newly published Guidance Handbook for Councillors which was launched on the day by AILG President Cllr. Gail Dunne.
This comprehensive handbook covers a wide array of topics essential for councillors, including an overview of AILG, the legislative and policy frameworks, and the specific roles of the Elected Member, Cathaoirleach/Mayor, and Chief Executive. Additionally, it outlines procedures for council meetings, local authority finance, and the functions of various committees. Key sections also address ethics and governance, the Code of Conduct for Councillors, and regulations concerning lobbying, GDPR, and FOI. The handbook provides crucial information on the Protected Disclosures Act, payments and expenses, councillor representative bodies, and offers guidance on training, development, and personal security for Councillors.
