AILG–Maynooth University Launch New Accredited Course for Councillors on Spatial Planning

AILG have launched a new Micro-Credential course in Spatial Planning for Councillors, in partnership with Maynooth University.

Specifically designed for elected members, the micro-credential course ‘The Planning System in Ireland – An Introduction to Spatial Planning Policy and Practice’ offers councillors a valuable opportunity to build foundational knowledge of the planning system. This NFQ Level 8 programme will equip councillors with the essential tools to critically assess planning decisions in the context of national, regional, and local development priorities.

This is a valuable opportunity for elected members to upgrade their professional and academic knowledge in a complex policy area where councillors play a key role in shaping decisions that directly impact citizens’ lives.

The course will commence on 15th November 2025 and will be delivered over 12 weeks through a blend of in-person and online sessions (7 sessions in total).


Why Take Part?
Sessions will cover key themes including:
• The planning system and hierarchy (national to local)
• Balanced regional development
• The councillor’s role in planning
• Evidence-informed policymaking
• Planning and its relationship with housing, transport, and the environment


Key Features:
• Hybrid format – a total of seven sessions delivered through a mix of in-person and evening online classes. The sessions will be delivered on a bi-weekly basis.
• Expert-led content aligned with the Planning and Development Act 2024 and revised National Planning Framework (NPF)
• Peer-to-peer learning and networking with fellow elected members across the country
• Completion of a practical assignment directly linked to your role as a councillor in the planning process


Course Details:
• Award: NFQ Level 8 | Credits: 5 ECTS
• Total cost: €1,270 (including registration)
• Local authorities may cover course fees under the elected members’ training budget.
