AILG Autumn Seminar 2026

The AILG held its 2026 Autumn Training Seminar on 30 September and 1 October, bringing together elected members, local government representatives and sectoral leaders to discuss the future of local democracy and local government in Ireland.

Themed “The Local Democracy Taskforce: From Report to Reality”, the seminar focused on the recommendations of the Local Democracy Taskforce and the journey towards implementation. The opening evening included contributions from local government representatives in Donegal and Minister John Cummins TD, Minister of State for Planning and Local Government. The evening also recognised graduates of the AILG–Maynooth University Spatial Planning Micro-credential.

Thursday’s programme examined the Local Democracy Taskforce Report: Realising the Ambition for Local Government, with discussions on the opportunities for transforming local government and strengthening the role of the councillor in terms of representation, influence and impact. The afternoon session brought an international perspective, with local government leaders from Ireland, Wales, England, Northern Ireland and Scotland sharing experiences and exploring lessons that could inform the future of local democracy in Ireland. AILG thanks all speakers, panellists and delegates who contributed to a successful and engaging Autumn Training Seminar.
