Hundreds of councillors from across Ireland gathered in the beautiful surroundings of Hotel Minella in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary last week for the AILG Annual Training Conference 2026.
The conference provided a valuable opportunity for elected members to come together, share experiences, and engage in practical discussions on how we respond to changing communities, support balanced regional development, and address key societal issues.
Responding to Changing Communities
A central focus of the conference was how local authorities can respond to population change across both urban and rural areas.
Through engagement with the GAA’s Population Demographic Report, councillors explored the shared challenges facing communities — from rapid growth in some areas to sustainability concerns in others — and the importance of coordinated, place-based responses.
A key milestone from the session was the signing of a historic charter between AILG and the GAA, marking a new phase of collaboration between both organisations and a shared commitment to strengthening communities across Ireland.
Local Leadership on EVAWG
The conference also placed a strong emphasis on the role of councillors in addressing violence against women and girls.
Through a dedicated session with frontline organisations and sectoral experts, members explored practical actions that can be taken at local level, including:
- Embedding EVAWG priorities within Community Safety Plans
- Integrating responses across council strategies and planning frameworks
- Supporting the development of refuges and safe housing solutions
The discussion highlighted the importance of political leadership, with councillors recognising their role in advocating for safer communities and supporting local services.
The conference also provided an opportunity to reflect on wider developments across the sector, including the importance of continued collaboration with Government departments and the ongoing work to strengthen the role of local government.
Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Jerry Buttimer TD, addressed the conference dinner, highlighting the central role of local authorities in delivering balanced regional development and supporting thriving communities.
AILG would like to thank all members who attended, along with our speakers, partners and organisers, for contributing to a really successful and engaging conference.
