Ukraine asks world mayors to support the country’s cities

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has asked mayors worldwide for humanitarian aid for the people of his country. At the same time, he appealed to the international partners of Ukrainian cities to support the eventual reconstruction of his country. “I address not only friendly governments, but also the mayors of European and other cities in the world,” he said. “We appeal to you: “Renew the tradition of twin cities. Support Ukrainian cities with humanitarian aid and funds for reconstruction.”

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk has confirmed that at least 11 Mayors of Ukrainian cities and towns have been abducted and kidnapped by Russian forces to date.

Speaking in response to the situation, President of AILG, Cllr. Nicholas Crossan said;

“Now more than ever, it is vital that we champion principles of democracy, and we demonstrate in whatever way we can a commitment to our fellow Europeans. On behalf of the 949 elected councillors across Ireland, the Association of Irish Local Government strongly condemns the military invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces and the kidnapping of several mayors in Russian-occupied territory. We wish to express our full support and solidarity with the citizens of Ukraine and our local and regional elected colleagues, who are on the front lines to protect the population and provide them with basic services.
